In 1927 Sir John Hoskyns stated :
“Strategic leadership requires one important skill.
It is a readiness to look personally foolish;
And a readiness to discuss half-baked ideas.
Since most fully baked ideas start out in that form;
You need total honesty & a readiness to admit when you got it wrong,
But also an eager readiness to celebrate when you got it RIGHT !”
This quote rang true when Stowe launched its new corporate image at a gala event on 01 August 2001, and it surely is pertinent when celebrating yet another outstanding result of the Company’s service delivery to its customer-base.
On behalf of the Company’s Stakeholders, I would like to congratulate the Stowe Employees – including our strategic Contracting & Alliance partners – for the commitment they displayed to their employ at Stowe and in jointly succeeding in reaching targeted Service Level Standards over the last 8 months.
During December 2007 and under testing circumstances, Stowe took on the additional support of site systems and fuel management technologies at BP Southern Africa Express locations, as well as Sasol Oil, Imperial Bulk Services & Shell fuelling locations and virtually doubled its workload overnight. In addition, performance demands were raised to that of 98% conforming to Stowe’s formal service level criteria (previously targeted at 95%). This while service levels to the rest of Stowe customer-base were expected to be adhered to – and in fact, improved on.
As expected, the period between December 2007 and April 2008 were challenging and once the initial pressures and impact on resource management & allocation, as well as training and other logistical aspects were absorbed by the Stowe Team, a steady drive towards teaching targeted service levels was clearly visible. Proof of this came in May 2008 when Stowe delivered above 98% SLA conformance to BP and followed through with similar result in June and August 2008.
Significant to this is that exceptional results were also maintained for the rest of Stowe’s customers, clearly indicating an overall commitment from the Stowe Team that just could not be ignored.
As a result an incentive (in the form of a cash payment) was allocated to each and every staff member of Stowe, including contractors that contributed to this achievement. More importantly, specific consideration was given to those staff members that excelled above their colleagues and to this end the formal results of Stowe’s policy on staff assessment and performance differentiation was used as a guideline of monetary value that each staff member qualified for.
Some of the Stowe Team enjoying what they like best … beating
the odds and setting new boundaries in achievement.
It remains a privilege to be surrounded by the spirited Stowe Team and while acknowledgements for exceptional service delivery from our customers remains nothing new to our dynamic Company, it is refreshing to see that new challenges are still taken-on with the one quality that separates us from our opposition …. a Can Do attitude !
